Who runs this, and who pays for it
There is no good reason to trust a site that corrects other people's figures and will not say who runs it. So: names, money, and what we are not.
Who
This site is built and maintained by Anthony George.
It is a companion to the UK Public Finances Explorer, which applies the same method to government debt and borrowing: official statistics, per-figure provenance, and plain English about what each number does and does not measure.
The UK State Pension Explorer is another, on current State Pension rates, the triple lock, what pensions can cover and the options for reform.
Who pays
Nobody. This site is unfunded. It is built in spare time and hosted at negligible cost on static hosting. There is no grant, no advertising, no sponsorship, no commercial relationship with any organisation working in this field, and no payment from anyone with an interest in how migration statistics are reported.
If that ever changes, this page changes first, before anything else on the site does.
What that means for what you read here
Being unfunded is not a claim to neutrality. It removes one category of pressure and leaves every other one in place: my own assumptions, the sources I happen to know about, and the questions it does not occur to me to ask.
What this site offers instead of a claim to be unbiased is a claim to be checkable. Every figure on this site carries the publication it came from, the period it covers, what it counts, and when it was last verified. The underlying data files are public, the code that renders them is public, and the record of every change to a published figure is public. If a number here is wrong, you should be able to prove it without taking my word for anything.
What this site is not
It is not a fact-checking organisation. It has no editorial board, no second reader, and no institutional backing. It is one person applying a consistent method, and it should be read that way.
It is not a source of original data. Every figure was published by somebody else, and where our figure and theirs differ, theirs is right and ours is a bug.
It takes no position on what immigration policy should be. That is a question about values, and this site has no standing to answer it. It takes a firm position on the misuse of statistics, and applies that in every direction.
Corrections
If something here is wrong, please say so, and say which figure and what you think it should be. Open an issue, which needs a free GitHub account. This site handles corrections in public, which is the same standard it asks of the figures it checks, and sources and method says what that costs a reader who has no account.
Every change to a published figure is recorded in the public changelog, with the reason and the source. See corrections for the full policy.
Reuse
The data files and the code are public. Most figures are Crown copyright, published under the Open Government Licence v3.0.
If you reuse them, keep the source and the period attached. A figure stripped of those is the raw material for exactly the confusion this site exists to reduce.
